Siskiyou County’s Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition
Saturday, January 27, 2018, 3:00 p.m. at Yreka Preservation Hall, Yreka
This special event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served.
Poetry is filling the classrooms and school hallways across Siskiyou County! Local high school students will compete in the Annual Siskiyou County Poetry Out Loud competition on January 27, 2018. Come celebrate and support our county high school students as they perform their selected poetry. As a special treat, last year’s county winner, Kylie Woods, will be reciting and sharing the highlights of her experience at last year’s state finals. Hosted by the Siskiyou County Arts Council and the Siskiyou County Office of Education, this event will bring together students from across the area for an afternoon of recitation, refreshments, music and awards.
- Unlike other poetry competitions, there are no costumes, props, or sets allowed in Poetry Out Loud. Students must select their poems from an anthology of over 900 classic and contemporary poems, which span a variety of cultures and genres.
- During the competition, participants are evaluated on six criteria: physical presence, voice and articulation, evidence of understanding, dramatic appropriateness, accuracy, and overall performance.
- Participants recite their chosen poems, using their voices to convey all of the emotion and energy of the printed word. For most people, the thought of public speaking is frightening enough, but add in the element of poetry (another seemingly-scary topic) and many people would be terror-stricken. Yet, for the local high school students who will take the stage, those fears are cast aside, replaced by courage and strength.
- The winners of CA county contests will advance to the state competition in Sacramento in March; and state winners compete in Washington, D.C. in April.
Join the Siskiyou County Office of Education and the Arts Council on January 27 as we honor
these brave students who are breathing new life into old words. Let’s celebrate poetry!

POL is a national program that thousands of students across the country participate in each year. It is offered in partnership by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, the California Arts Council and the Siskiyou County Arts Council.
Presented in partnership with the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the
Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is the nation’s largest youth poetry recitation
competition. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has reached nearly 3 million students and 9,500 schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The program encourages high school students to discover poetry through memorization, recitation, performance, and competition. Participants master public speaking skills, improve English-fluency and comprehension, and build self-confidence. They also learn to interpret and appreciate a variety of complex poems.
Structured like a spelling bee, Poetry Out Loud begins with classroom and school-wide
competitions, with winners advancing to county, state, and national levels. In California, over 40,000 students in 40 counties compete annually.
