Become a Board Member

The Siskiyou County Arts Council relies on its volunteers to fulfill its mission. As we move forward as a new council, we are looking to add board members from all supervisorial districts in Siskiyou County. This is an honored position that requires knowledge of our rural county and the arts scene within it. The arts council board must represent the diversity of our county’s rural communities

Community Outreach

  • Enhancing the organization’s public image by serving as ambassadors and advocating for the organization in order to advance its mission.
  • Listening to the organization’s constituency and using feedback to improve the organization’s programs and services. Recruiting and developing relationships with potential board members/ volunteers from all districts.
  • Identifying and leveraging connections and collaborations that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy.

As Individuals, Board Members:

  • Actively participate with the board and staff and honor team commitments- including attending and coming prepared to meetings. (Monthly 90-minute board meeting via teleconference/internet)
  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and goals, and actively secure resources that support short and long-range needs; training is provided by SCAC for new board members.
  • Treat all fellow board members, staff, volunteers, and community participants with respect, and follow all organization policies and bylaws with personal integrity and with utmost professional ethics.

Governance

  • Providing strategic leadership by setting direction, reviewing the mission, approving policy and strategy decisions, and overseeing and monitoring organizational performance, programs and services.
  • Ensuring overall accountability and alignment with contemporary professional practices.
  • Guaranteeing the organization operates at all levels with integrity and demonstrates ethical decision making and practices. Adhere to the organization’s bylaws and established policies. Assessing the board’s performance as the governing body.
  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director to manage day-to-day operations.

Financial Oversight

  • Providing strong fiduciary oversight and financial management of the organization’s assets in a manner that ensures long-term success of the organization, including approving and monitoring annual organizational budgets as well as developing long-range funding plans.
  • Fundraising and resource development in alignment with strategic and annual planning.
  • Confirming compliance with all applicable state/federal laws, safeguarding the organization’s tax-exempt status and monitoring grant funded/restricted monies with extra scrutiny.
  • Contributing and investing in the organization- by offering volunteer time at events or for programs, donating cash or in-kind contributions and/or professional expertise in areas needed by the organization.
