Poetry Out Loud Finals NEW DATE February 2, 2017

Siskiyou County Arts Council Reschedules the 2017 Siskiyou County Poetry Out Loud Finals Due to Snow.

The Siskiyou County Arts Council Siskiyou County Poetry Out Loud Finals will be held at the Yreka Library, on Thursday February 2, 2017 at 1:30 pm. Weed High School was shut down for three days last week due to snow. Because of the school closure students missed the opportunity to attend a theater workshop with Bennett Gale, actor, teacher and owner of New Frontier Theatre Company.

“In fairness to all of the students we are postponing the contest for one week. Students from Etna, Weed, Mattole and Golden Eagle Charter High Schools have spent many hours memorizing three poems and we want to support their efforts to do the best they can. The winner of the County Finals will represent Siskiyou at the state finals in Sacramento along with winners from 53 other California counties. It’s a terrific experience and opportunity for our students” stated Siskiyou county Poetry Out Loud County Coordinator Lauri Sturdivant

This poetry competition is presented by the Siskiyou County Arts Council in partnership with the Friends of the Yreka Library, the Poetry Foundation, California Arts Council with funding from the  National Endowment for the Arts. Over the past 11 years, Poetry Out Loud has reached more than 3 million students and 45,000 teachers from 10,000 schools nationwide.

On February 2, 2017 at 1:30 pm Siskiyou County students will recite three poem that they have selected from the Poetry Out Loud list of poems. The winner of this competition will represent Siskiyou County as they advance to the California State Poetry Out Loud contest on March 12 & 13, 2017. The California champion will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on April 25–26, 2017 in Washington, DC where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
