The Siskiyou County Arts Council is pleased to announce the appointment of a seasoned arts organization leader, Lugene Whitley, as their new executive director- effective May 1. The hire follows a statewide search by members of the art council’s board and hiring committee. Whitley succeeds Lauri Sturdivant, who served as interim executive director, and is one of the founders of the new county arts council. Sturdivant will continue with SCAC as the deputy director.
“It is an honor and a pleasure to have this chance to work with the arts council as it embarks on a compelling mission to integrate the county’s dynamic arts community into the daily lives of residents and visitors,” Whitley said. “I’m energized by the Board’s commitment to public engagement around the arts and to working with area artists and other arts and community organizations to provide opportunities for all to participate in the visual, literary and performing arts.”
Whitley brings significant experience in for-profit and nonprofit management. Before devoting herself to the arts, she spent 15 years in the private sector working in the high-tech industry and then in higher education managing an archive/research center. In the last 11 years, she has focused on arts education, exhibitions and events management, marketing and community outreach. She was the founding education director for a regional art museum and a founding director and grants manager for a private foundation granting to the visual arts.
“We feel very fortunate to have attracted an executive director of Lugene’s caliber,” said Rebecca Bruhn, President, Siskiyou County Arts Council. “Her passion for the arts, understanding of best practices, and commitment to community impact make her an ideal fit for SCAC. Lugene joins us at an exciting time in the organization’s development along with the partnership with the California Arts Council. The development of our strategic plan will begin with a county-wide listening tour to introduce Lugene to the current arts landscape, while identifying ways in which the arts council can support and enhance opportunities for experiencing the arts- in all of Siskiyou County’s communities.”
