Voices of the Golden Ghosts

Voices of the Golden Ghosts began in 2018 and with the goal to tell a more realistic picture of local history. The project focuses on the free and enslaved African Americans who took part in the gold rush. Director Mark Oliver gathered 20 authors and produced a book of essays of the same name: ‘Voices of the Golden Ghosts-African Americans in the California Gold Rush.’

McCloud Dance Hall

Nestled at the base of Mount Shasta, in McCloud, California, the McCloud Dance Hall has stood as a pillar in the community since its construction in 1906. Locals loved gathering here to enjoy live music by the Hottentots, a favorite local band that originated in the 1920’s. The Hall was used as a lodge and community space through the 1970’s, when it became Dance Country: the square, round, and ballroom dance center for the area. It’s been utilized as a cafeteria for the McCloud Lumber Company, a school gymnasium, and meeting space. The McCloud Dance Hall features a 5,000 square foot sprung dance floor, a large meeting room, and kitchen.

Seeds of Ancestral Renewal – Siskiyou

Formed in 2021, The Seeds of Ancestral Renewal collective is a group of BIPOC community care workers and artists that span across the cascade range from the coast of Humboldt county to the mountains of Siskiyou. The organization began on Wiyot territory aka Humboldt out of the need for mutual aid amidst a pandemic where we wanted our BIPOC birthing community to be supported by BIPOC practitioners. We consist of a core group of organizers and practitioners that support community health through the Traditional Healing Arts, including birthwork, herbalism, and storytelling. Our work focuses on the collective spirit of healing. In 2022, Brenda Montaño and Renée Camila founded the local Siskiyou branch in order to share these teachings and offerings with our local community.
